We can tackle a problem in different ways

About our school

Melbourn Primary School is a co-educational community school catering for children from age five years to 11 years. The school has origins in Melbourn going back to 1818. The "old building" has a foundation stone dated 1855, the remaining parts of the school being added in the 1970s and 1980s.

We are proud of the many facilities and opportunities which make our school special. We are fortunate to have a large enclosed playing field which we are able to use for PE, games, community events and outdoor play. We also have a garden area in the school grounds through which we encourage the children to become environmentally aware. We have large playgrounds. We also have our own learner swimming pool which is used in the summer term. Older children are taken to McSplash to experience deep-water swimming. We are also keen to develop a love of music in the school, through our commitment to music teaching, and to the provision of opportunities for children to learn to play musical instruments. There is access to computers in each classroom plus two portable trolleys with class sets of laptops. We are currently extending our ICT provision to include “I’m a Millionaire” type keypads for assessment and questioning purposes. We are fortunate to have our own kitchen in which nutritional meals are prepared daily.

We will have 290 children in the school this year in ten classes. Although we are a fairly large primary school we keep our class sizes as small as possible. Our teaching staff offer knowledge and expertise across a wide curriculum. We feel that our pupils reflect a broad comprehensive mix of backgrounds which helps our children to develop life skills.

Schools operate in a climate of review and development, of improvement and target setting. We are a school that is dedicated to improvement and are extremely open about this for we want to provide the best quality of education for our children. We review performance data such as test performances and scores but also concentrate on knowing the child, their strengths and needs. We set pupils targets to achieve by the end of the school year. Our Governing Body also monitors our performance as do outside agencies such as the Local Authority (Cambridgeshire County Council) and the Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED).
