What is a governor?
The governors are a group of people who work closely with the Head Teacher, to help run the school. Their three main functions are:
- To provide strategic management – this involves reviewing school policies and deciding priorities for improving the school. It does not involve making day-to-day decisions about the running of the school. Many of their responsibilities are decided by government legislation.
- To act as a critical friend – this is achieved by offering constructive criticism and giving opinions on proposals for change, while being generally supportive of the school.
- To review the school’s progress and the quality of education it provides – this includes looking at results in national tests, but also looking at all aspects of what is taught at school and how this helps children to enjoy and achieve while at school.
While these three aims are at the core of the governors’ role, they also have other duties. They approve the school budget, help with the school’s Ofsted inspection, and the review and appointment of the Head Teacher.
Being a governor involves a variety of activities. There are several committees that meet once or twice a term, but they also visit the school regularly, to meet the staff and also to watch lessons.
Who are the governors?
The governors are ordinary people, frequently parents or past parents of the school, but also include members of the wider village community.
