We expect to learn things all our lives

art

Philosophy
We believe that the study of art shall include the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of techniques, and the development of critical awareness to appreciate and evaluate the work of other artists. We shall encourage pupils to respect the variety of art forms and artistic styles, and to form balanced opinions upon their own interpretations and of their right to disagree with others over interpretations.

Art is important because

  • It is a creative and pleasurable activity which can provide fulfilment and interest throughout life
  • It can lead to enhancement of observational skills
  • It encourages taking a balanced and objective view of the work of self and others
  • It encourages creativity and expression

Aims
In teaching art we aim that children will

  • Develop a body of skills involving abroad range of materials and techniques
  • Develop a sense of enjoyment in their own creativity as artists
  • Find a sense of purpose, enjoyment, achievement and fulfilment in artistic expression and work with enthusiasm and confidence
  • Develop their ability to express their thinking and their ideas in a broad range of materials and techniques
  • Develop their ability to communicate their observations, their thoughts and their views of artists and their work and understand that art appreciation may be subject to different opinions
  • The emphasis in our teaching of art is on allowing all children to develop artistic skills, knowledge and understanding through a rich wealth of experiences. Pupils will be encouraged to select appropriate materials, tools and equipment for each activity and given the opportunity to handle and observe artefacts and work of other artists.
  • It is our fundamental aim that through their study pupils will develop a life-long interest in and appreciation of art in a wide range of forms and styles.
