Philosophy Mathematics is a body of knowledge which covers a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in respect of number, shape and space, measurement, handling data and using and applying mathematics.
We believe that mathematics provides away for children to make sense of the world around them.
- It is a form of communicating ideas and explanations
- It encourages thought, prediction and explanation and provides intellectual challenge.
- Mathematics is a subject based upon logic and pattern and is widely used in society, both in everyday situations and in employment.
The school recognises that pupils will continue their education in this subject beyond their period at this school. We shall attempt to give pupils the skills and knowledge to continue their studies in mathematics at secondary school and beyond.
Aims In teaching mathematics we aim that children will:-
- Be numerate and have the ability to calculate answers using a variety of written and mental methods
- Find a sense of purpose, enjoyment, achievement and fulfilment in the study of mathematics and work with enthusiasm and confidence
- Develop a body of mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding
- Apply their skills in a range of activities and situations
- Develop their sense of enquiry, open-mindedness, perseverance
and objectivity
- Develop their ability to communicate their thinking and the findings of their investigations
