Philosophy We believe that science provides a way for children to make sense of the world around them. The pupils at this school will be presented with opportunities to learn about and investigate their world and the way that things work, and to develop skills, knowledge and vocabulary to facilitate this. Learning opportunities will be based on guidelines taken from the National Curriculum and these will match with their age and ability.
Science is important because
- It is a body of knowledge essential to our understanding or our world
- It encourages thought, prediction and explanation and provides intellectual challenge
- It is a subject based upon observations, systematic enquiry
and evaluation
- It is widely used in society, both in everyday situations and
in employment
Aims In teaching science we aim that children will
- Find a sense of purpose, enjoyment, achievement and fulfilment in the study of science and work with enthusiasm and confidence
- Develop a body of scientific skills knowledge and understanding
- Develop their sense of questioning about the world around them
- Develop their sense of enquiry, open-mindedness, perseverance
and objectivity
- Develop their ability to communicate their thinking and the findings of their investigations
- Apply their science-related skills in a range of activities and situations
- Be encouraged to play a responsible part in the future shaping of
our environment
The emphasis in our teaching of science is on allowing all children to develop their scientific skills, knowledge and understanding through practical work and investigation. Great emphasis is given to the experimental and investigative science in contexts derived from life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. Pupils will be encouraged to use scientific language and to use and apply their reasoning and skills in a variety of scientific experiences.
Resources The resources for science will be kept in the science and mathematics cupboard within school. They will be kept under review to ensure that they are relevant to the needs of the children. Resources will be replenished and replaced whenever necessary.
